Here at Old Town Orange Dental Group, we know that accidents and injuries can happen at any time, even dental emergencies. While dental traumas may not seem life-or-death situations, it is important to seek immediate medical attention to avoid further damage to your mouth. In our practice here in Orange CA, we provide emergency dentistry services, so if you have suffered an injury or trauma to the mouth, please come to us and we'll make sure a doctor can see you as soon as possible.
When you come in with a dental emergency, our team will do an examination to evaluate the cause and extent of the damage you've suffered and what are the possible treatments available to alleviate your pain and fix the dental issue. If the injury or trauma is extensive, your dentist might refer you to a specialist once your injury has been stabilized. Dr. Levitt will do an emergency examination, where a visual examination of your mouth and teeth will be conducted to assess the situation. Dental X-rays will be ordered if a more detailed image is needed, to determine the appropriate treatment. Once the injury or problem has been determined, Dr. Levitt and his team will clean the area affected and prep it for treatment by applying a local anesthetic to block the pain and numb the area. We also offer different sedation options to make your feel more at ease and relaxed during the procedure.
Types of Dental Emergencies:
- Infections – these can cause pain and swelling, and it is crucial to treat them as soon as possible to avoid it spreading and affecting other areas. The infection will be cleaned and all bacteria removed. Dr. Levitt might prescribe an antibiotic if the infection requires it.
- Trauma – injuries to your face and mouth can produce broken bones, teeth, lacerations to your lips, gums, tongue, etc., and need to be tended to immediately to avoid infections and also save as much of the natural teeth or tissues. Restorative procedures will be used to try and repair the damage caused by the trauma, with extraction being the last resort.
Minor dental injuries can be treated at home before making an appointment to be checked by a dentist. However, major traumas or injuries need immediate attention to avoid further damage or pain.
