Oral Cancer Screenings
Here at Old Town Orange Dental Group, we know that prevention or early detection can be crucial to successfully treat a disease or dental issue. That is why we provide oral cancer screenings as part of your complete dental checkup. Dentists recommend that you have a complete checkup twice a year that way your dentist can detect any anomalies or problems early on and take immediate action before the issue becomes worse.
An oral cancer screening consists of a thorough examination by your dentist of your mouth and neck looking for lesions or abnormal growths that could be a sign of cancer. Your dentist will first do a visual examination, checking your lips, tongue, cheeks, gums, teeth, and neck for any abnormalities. Then a manual examination will proceed with your dentist feeling your neck and mouth for any abnormal growths. After that, your dentist might use a special dye or laser to have a more thorough examination. If your dentist determines or spots any abnormalities, a brush test will be ordered to test the cells for cancer conditions. Depending on results, further tests like a biopsy can be ordered to confirm the results.
There are several risk factors that can contribute to oral cancer such as:
- History of cancer in the family or previous cancer diagnosis
- Extensive sun exposure (lip cancer)
- Heavy use of alcohol
- Chewing or smoking tobacco
It is important that you are aware of these factors and take precautions to decrease or eliminate the use or exposure to these factors to reduce your risk of developing cancer. If you observe lesions or abnormal growths in your mouth or neck, it is crucial that you seek medical attention immediately so you can be examined and treated if needed. Having your dental checkup twice a year can help maintain your dental and overall health.
